If you tend to watch a lot of anime or read a lot of manga, you’ve most likely come across the good ol’ classic school uniform for boys: the gakuran. With its stiff standing collar, gold buttons, and matching black trousers and button-down top, the gakuran manages to be both smart and inconspicuous. That doesn’t mean you have to abandon individuality completely, though—many unbutton their top to show off colorful shirts or hoodies underneath or jazz up their look with flashy accessories. School uniforms have long since been mandatory in most junior high and high schools throughout Japan. Even so, students in anime and manga still manage to find ways to express their individuality by adding items like hoodies or even just by wearing them in a more relaxed fashion. While this may not always align with their dress codes, sometimes the rules of fashion outweigh everything else, don’t you think?

Almost always shown wearing his gakuran-style uniform, Miyuki Shirogane (from Kaguya-sama: Love is War) accentuates his look with a gold chain passed down from previous presidents of his school’s student council.
