When you think of Western classical music, the violin is probably one of the first instruments that comes to mind. The word “violin” is said to originate from Vitula, the Roman goddess of joy, or from the related Latin verb vitulari, meaning “to sing or rejoice.” Indeed, the sounds a violin makes are as varied as they come depending on how you play it: sometimes warm, rich, and graceful, sometimes longing and mournful, and other times even rough and playful. The violinist’s elegant silhouette created by resting the instrument against their shoulder and under their chin is like a work of art in itself, and watching them play can elicit a sigh of wonder and contentment.

Do any of the following illustrations tug at your heartstrings?

Everything about the violin, from its shape to its sound, has an aura of refinement, beauty, and class. Of course, the same can be said about those who can masterfully play it. With a gentle push and pull of the bow, an enormous range of stunning sounds can be produced that can elicit just as many emotions. To create such magnificent music, the player must adhere to a certain form that is somehow rigid yet relaxed at the same time.

Can you imagine what sort of exquisite music Sayaka Miki (from Puella Magi Madoka Magica) is drawing out of her violin?
