A staple feature of traditional Japanese houses is the engawa, a Japanese porch-like structure that serves as a space between the inside and outside of the house. While it’s rare to see them in newer homes and apartments, they’re still quite common in the countryside, and many folks in Japan have fond memories of eating watermelon on the engawa or taking a nap there during summer while visiting their grandparents.

Do any of these illustrations fill you with a sense of nostalgia?

Traditional Japanese houses have something called an engawa, which is essentially like a veranda that looks out on a garden. It's pretty common to see scenes where characters are depicted sitting here, just chilling and drinking tea, eating snacks, or even taking naps! It's the perfect place to enjoy both nature and the weather!

Take a look at the collection of illustrations below of characters hanging out on the engawa!

Is there a place in your home that you like to go to to relax? Many anime and manga fans will have seen scenes featuring the wooden verandas of traditionally built Japanese homes. It’s a spot where many characters come to contemplate life, have conversations with loved ones, or even just lounge about in the afternoon sun. This is also the case for many people in Japan as well, which may also explain the spot’s prevalence in many works of fiction.

Sesshomaru and Rin (from Inuyasha) share a rare moment on their Japanese veranda, bathing in the glow of a swarm of fireflies.

Do any of the illustrations below hit the spot for you?
