Originally a light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino, The Apothecary Diaries has been adapted into a manga and anime, with the first season airing from October 2023 to March 2024. Set in a fictional country based on ancient China, the series follows Maomao, a young girl working as an apothecary in the red-light district who gets kidnapped and sold to the Imperial Court one day. Due to her wealth of knowledge about poison and medicine and many eccentricities, she soon catches the eye of the attractive and influential eunuch Jinshi. Using her extensive experience as an apothecary, Maomao gradually makes a name for herself by solving various mysteries in the court.

Jiāngshī, otherwise known as a Chinese hopping vampire, is a type of reanimated corpse in Chinese folklore that has inspired countless jiāngshī films in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and across East Asia. Rather than blood, these creatures come alive at night and suck the life force out of living beings. While they can sometimes appear terrifying, they can also take on the appearance of a relatively ordinary-looking, recently deceased person, like the ones featured in today’s article. Besides, don’t they seem more endearing than scary when you imagine them doing their best to hop towards you?
