Hannya Masks: Hatred Turns Humans into Demons

When you hear the word “Hannya”, you probably think about a mask with a frightful appearance and a pair of threatening horns. Did you know that this mask is used in Noh (traditional Japanese theater) to represent a woman eaten by grudge and jealousy?

Wouldn’t it be scary if you were walking in the dark and suddenly a Hannya mask appears right in front of you? You certainly can’t help but to run for your life.

Kōda Rohan, a Japanese author in the Meiji period, describes the Hannya as the “ultimate beauty”. The expression depicted on the mask, in fact, emphasizes the feature of woman’s beauty by having them carved deep into it. The meaning behind the mask is that jealousy can turn even the most attractive woman into a demon.

The sickle is hovering menacingly in the air and the image of a “Shinigami” is reflected in the shiny and cold metal. The shinigami is a harbinger of death and is often drawn as a sinister skeleton dressed in black, tattered robes and wielding a large and pointed scythe. However, the Shinigami’s role is said to be one who ushers the soul into the afterword in order to prevent them from wandering around the Earth as a lost soul. Death is truth that no human can escape or try to elude, but it could be that Shinigami protect us even after our deaths.

Tengu are a type of legendary creature found in Japanese ancient folk tales. They are considered both a type of gods and demons. They are similar to “yamabushi”, or “mountain priests”, Japanese ascetic hermits with supernatural powers living in the mountains. They have red faces, a long nose and wings growing from their back. As you can imagine, they often make an appearance in Japanese fantasy. Today we collected artworks having Tengu as protagonists. Enjoy!

It’s easy to recognize a dwarf: their muscular bodies, shaggy beards, and glorious axes that might seem too big for their small nature. They often appear in fantasy novels and games, and they are usually portrayed spelunking the darkest mines looking for precious gems or working as blacksmiths - hitting hot steel with an heavy-looking hammer. They are such skilled craftsmen! It’s not rare to see them depicted not as heroes but as supporting characters - a little clunky and rough.
