It's easiest to use a time device to figure out the time, whether you're using your phone or one of the more traditional time-telling devices like a clock, watch, sundial, or hourglass (as you do). Time devices are great symbolic motifs, whether you draw them broken or working as expected, and they can also give your illustration a sense of time and place!

Thinking about incorporating a time device into your latest piece?
Steampunk is a word used to describe an artistic and cultural movement that revolves around machinery powered via steam, pipes, and gears rather than by electricity. This aesthetic seamlessly blurs the line between retro and futuristic through imaginative and ornately designed clothing and machinery. While some of the most prominent elements of the look are goggles, gears, and guns, the only true limit to this mechanized aesthetic is your imagination!

Renko Usami and Maribel Hearn (from Touhou Project) look as though they’re ready to explore the ins and outs of the steampunk-inspired world they find themselves in.

Have any of the illustrations set your gears in motion?

The passage of time is a phenomenon that has intrigued humans since its very dawn. Clocks help us make sense of it all and, with an endless number of designs and shapes, help us enjoy watching time tick away, second by second. Whether they’re basic kitchen clocks, delicately built and retro chic pocket watches, or even the enormous clock at the Palace of Westminster in the U.K. affectionately known as Big Ben, these devices play a big part in keeping our lives in order.

Subway Bosses Emmet and Ingo (from Pokémon Black, White, and their sequels) heavily rely on clocks in their work of keeping trains on schedule and making sure their battles end in a timely manner.

If you have a second to spare, take a peek at some of the beautiful artwork below.

Hourglasses with their sand grains have been used for centuries to tell time. The sand in an hourglass keeps falling, without ever stopping or reversing in its course... Time, too, flows without ever stopping or rolling back. Time may not be visible to the human eye, but as you watch the sand in an hourglass drops grain by grain, you will realize the magic of it all--you're witnessing a physical manifestation of time!

Today we are featuring illustrations of hourglasses.
Do you wear a wristwatch?

Due to the proliferation of smartphone, few occasions today probably still require the presence of a wristwatch. Nevertheless, it’s likely that the practice of fastening the strap of a wristwatch remains a part of some people’s rituals to start their days. Apart from its purpose, which is to tell the time, wristwatches are admired by many as works of art, what with their stunning dial and strap designs. Amplifying the exquisite quality of a lady’s slender wrist or representing a man’s individuality--a wristwatch has the ability to accomplish both with stellar results.

Today, we’re featuring illustrations of wristwatches. Enjoy!

Clock towers are huge clocks on a building or tower that make it easy for people in the vicinity to check the time. In the past, people rarely put on wrist watches, and relied on the chimes of clock towers to keep track of time. Big Ben situated in London and the large clock tower in Sapporo, Hokkaido are some of the famous ones. You could call them the symbols of towns, as they overlook the town and protect citizens in the day, and become part of the beautiful night scenery as dusk arrives.

This time, we have a special feature on clock towers! Take a look!

The watch/clock is an essential tool we need in our daily life. From wall clocks to watches, they come in all sorts of sizes and are highly convenient. Of course, you are able to check the time with your smartphone, but it’s always important to have one in business settings or examinations.
Up till the 1970s, watches and clocks used to be mechanically driven with a coil.
However, watches and clocks today are run by electricity, and quartz clocks have become the norm, resulting in more accurate time-telling. However, the nostalgic clocks from the past are still popular among fanatics, and are still being produced.
This time, we will feature illustrations based on the highly important clocks!

In a glass that's shaped like a gourd, the sand drops from the top to the bottom part showing the movement of time. It's the hourglass! Watching the grains of sand move smoothly from one part to the next... oh no, suddenly all your time disappeared!
Today's Spotlight is all about putting characters inside of the hourglass... check them out!
