Today, Feb 8th, is Post Office Symbol day! It's different from merely a postmark--in Japan, the symbol 〒 represents the post office and any kind of related postal service, including postal worker uniforms. So when you have postal code (or in the US, a zip code) it is always preceded by the 〒 symbol. The Ministry of Communications and Transportation (dissolved in 1949) announced the symbol in the year Meiji 20 (1887). Originally, it was just a "T" as in Japanese the Ministry of Communications and Transportation starts with "Teishin"... but then they decided to take the first character (テ, Te) and designed it into 〒. Today's Spotlight is about the postman who travels to deliver your mail regardless of rain or shine! There are so many ways to deliver mail... check them out!
