Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time hit Japanese theaters on March 8th, 2021, as the fourth and final chapter of the Rebuild of Evangelion series. The characters of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which first aired in 1995, and the way they end up relating to one another has been heavily revisited in this movie series. The director, Hideaki Anno, has always stated that he meant these movies to serve as a reinterpretation of the original story, as he wishes it could have been in its first run, with the help of the latest animation technologies. This concluding chapter surprised the audience as it answers many questions to which the anime series fans would never expect Anno to give such a clear answer.

── The “Rebuild of Evangelion” series is finally at an end.

On July 6th, 2019, the first 10 minutes of the film (AVANT 1, 0706 version) premiered at Japan Expo in Paris. It was packed with unanswered questions.

We’ve all been looking forward to this film from the day it was announced through until the day it’ll be released to the public. The director of the film, Hideaki Anno, and the vocal talent of Megumi Ogata (playing the protagonist, Shinji) are sure to deliver in this final episode of the series. The closure of the series brings complicated feelings to those on the project, with Director Anno making a public video message and Ogata stating, “I wanted to finish this series before I die and now it’s really going to end at last.”

The final setting for Evangelion is, surprisingly, in Paris. Lucky fans who viewed those 10 minutes cheered with joy at each twist, from never-before-seen Angels to the pilot Mari Illustrious Makinami and even the streets of Paris like those from Tokyo-3. The content was a hot topic online. Many fans were elated that Paris was the setting. On the other hand though, many didn’t want the Eiffel Tower to be destroyed… And just how is the latest film connected to the previous one?
