In the famous words of Shirley Bassey, “Diamonds are forever.” This is by no means a figurative expression—diamonds are said to have formed within the earth more than three billion years ago, and even younger gemstones such as sapphires have been around for millions of years! The luster, color, and brilliance of precious stones have captivated people throughout the ages, making them highly symbolic prized possessions. Although most often associated with jewelry, gemstones have also been used for talismans, burial suits, sacrificial knives, and musical instruments. And understandably so—how can you not help but be mesmerized and fascinated by their enticing sparkle?

Today’s drawings feature various kinds of gemstones in all their glittering magnificence. The way they reflect the light and transform into prisms of color is truly a sight to behold! Marvel at them as much as you like, but be careful not to get too sucked into their beauty!

Transparent objects are notoriously difficult to draw. It takes a lot of skill to figure out how light should refract through an object you’ve illustrated, such as water, crystals, and even glass. There’s a balance in trying not to “overdo” the color gradients as well.

But all of the illustrations below seem to capture transparent objects almost perfectly. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, opals... there are so many kinds of jewels. They collect light and glitter--what a great miracle of nature!
They often are used in accessories and dresses... but they're so difficult to illustrate. These illustrations will show you how to draw them with good balance and make them beautiful! Try using them the next time you draw illustrations with characters and motifs that need them.
