Hinamatsuri (lit. doll festival) is a Japanese holiday that takes place on March 3rd. This beloved spring tradition celebrates children’s healthy growth and happiness. Huge displays of hina dolls representing an imperial couple and their servants are put on display, and families enjoy colorful chirashi sushi topped with shrimp and golden shredded egg. The holiday overflows with the joyous vibrancy of spring.

Herald spring with this collection of illustrations featuring Hinamatsuri.

Hinamatsuri, also known as Doll’s Day or Girls’ Day, is one of the major spring festivities in Japan, celebrated on the 3rd of March each year. The main display features two beautifully dressed dolls said to represent a Heian period wedding, although they’re usually described as the Emperor and Empress of Japan. The more elaborate and multi-tiered the stand—the bigger your budget, that is—the more dolls there are, each representing a musician or other court attendant.

Since Doll’s Day is also known as Momo no Sekku, aka Peach Festival, you’ll sometimes see sprigs of peach blossoms displayed alongside the dolls. And, of course, you can’t forget about the food, such as hina-arare (multi-colored rice sweets), chirashi-zushi (sushi rice with various ingredients scattered on top), and hishi-mochi (red and white rice cakes)!

Take a look below for a series of illustrations celebrating spring in adorable fashion!

Hina dolls are often said to represent the royal family, although the display is often in the style of a Heian Period wedding. Displays can be small, with only two dolls, or they can be quite elaborate, with multiple tiers and an entire court supporting the emperor and empress.

Japanese families often celebrate by eating a special meal, like multicolored rice cakes or chirashizushi (a variety of sushi in a bento box), while they enjoy the doll display.

Do you have any similar traditions where you’re from?

Hinamatsuri is a girls' festival that is held in Japan to pray for the healthy growth of the girls. Leading up to the festival, people would prepare the Emperor and Empress dolls, decorate various trees (such as the cherry tree, the tachibana tree, and the peach tree), make mochi and colorful rice crackers. Little girls dressed in kimono and laughing while they play with the dolls is a unique scenery that you only can see on Hinamatsuri.

Today we are featuring Hinamatsuri illustrations. On March 3, Japanese people celebrate "Hinamatsuri (Doll's Festival or Girl's Festival)"! The day is also called "Joshi (First Snake Day)" and "Momo-no-sekku (Peach Festival)". They used to have a custom called "Nagashi-bina", in which they float paper dolls down a river to expel bad luck. The paper doll eventually developed into "Hina Ningyo". Then in the middle Edo Period, they started to display dolls on stepped platform. The current style of "Hinamatsuri" was established in the early Showa to pray for the healthy development and happiness of girls.
Today's Spotlight is about "Hinamatsuri" themed illustrations. Let's cherish the Japanese traditional event with long history!
