Today is Day of Tokyo. On this day in 1868, Edo was renamed to become Tokyo-fu. It is said that Toshimichi Okubo is the person responsible for the naming. Back then, in 1889, there were 15 towns grouped under Tokyo-shi, but they came together with Tokyo-fu in 1943 to form the Tokyo-to we know today. The 23 wards were also split 5 years after the birth of Tokyo-to, in 1948. Currently, Tokyo-to is a bustling metropolitan city that has gone through a series of ups and downs. Today, in conjunction with Day of Tokyo, we have a series of illustrations starring various spots in Tokyo.
