There are many types of dark heroes, but the expression is often used to indicate evil and twisted characters that are in a rival position compared to the protagonist. Dark heroes don't fight for justice, and stand in the way of the protagonist for the whole course of the story. They usually come with a dark past and a solid force of will, and it's just natural to be attracted to them and their wicked smiles.
