If you’re familiar with the Chinese Zodiac, then you know which animal comes after the rabbit—that’s right, 2024 is the Year of the Dragon! Unlike their Western counterparts, which tend to have wings, stand upright on four legs, and breathe fire, dragons in Eastern mythology are usually wingless and tend to have longer serpentine bodies and shorter limbs. They are also often associated with water and depicted as benevolent guardians of villages or rivers, just like everyone's favorite kindhearted white and green river god, Haku!

Today, we’ve gathered multiple illustrations featuring graceful and majestic Eastern dragons. May the new year bring you much growth, progress, and abundance!

Japanese folklore is full of a wide variety of tales of yokai, or supernatural entities, that have been passed down through the ages. Though they were once the stuff of nightmares, recent artists have taken new approaches to how we see these yokai and have even made some of them downright adorable.

Takashi Natsume and Madara (from Natsume’s Book of Friends) seem to be sharing a special moment while other legendary yokai happily look on.

Is there any particular yokai below that has caught your attention?

Dragons often stand at the apex of the mythical beast hierarchy all over the world. But just what does a dragon look like? Well for most people in Asia, dragons are reptilian beasts with long snake-like bodies and imposing glares. Some have feet, and some don't. Some are scaly, and some are furry. No matter how they look, one thing is clear: you definitely don’t want to get on their bad side!

The design for the mighty Rayquaza (from Pokémon) obviously takes inspiration from dragon legends from that part of the world.

Which of the draconic drawings below ignites a fire in you?
