Every country has its supernatural entities and spirits; yōkai is one such class in Japan. Composed of two kanji characters that both mean “suspicious” and “doubtful,” yokai have been a part of Japanese folklore for centuries, and their influence is still alive and well in manga, anime, and games. While some yokai are known to be fearsome and malicious, others are simply mischievous or even benevolent. Once you start going down the yokai rabbit hole, you’ll probably find yourself so fascinated you won’t be able to turn back!
