The shimmering, interlocking links of a chain form a powerful visual motif, rich with symbolism. A character bound in chains evokes confinement and tragedy, while one struggling to break free radiates strength, driven by an unyielding desire for freedom.

Break free and explore this collection of illustrations featuring chains.

What words come to mind when you think of chains? More often than not, chains tend to be associated with words like captivity, imprisonment, and restraint. You’re also most likely to see them wrapped around gates with no trespassing warnings or have an image of a prisoner with a ball and chain around their ankle. When used as a motif in illustrations, they can either signify that the character is in a bind (no pun intended) or breaking free (both literally and figuratively) of their shackles, which make for powerful imagery.

Have you ever been in a tight spot that made you feel as if you were bound and chained? Perhaps you can relate to the illustrations below!

The use of chains in visual art can make quite an impression. Though they often represent a binding or loss of power and freedom, they can also be used as a weapon, giving the user a powerful defense against those who oppose them. You may also see them represent an unbreakable bond between characters.

The bond between Gilgamesh and Enkidu (from Fate/Grand Order) is perfectly represented by the winding chains surrounding them, don't you think?

Do any particular link to any of the chained characters below?
