Akira is widely considered one of the greatest science fiction films — and animated films — of all time. It has a cult following and is largely attributed to setting the stage for anime’s introduction into the west.

With such a large fanbase, it heavily influenced the cyberpunk genre as a whole, both within Japan and in other countries. Creative endeavors taking inspiration from the movie include films like The Matrix and video games like Valve’s Half-Life series.

So it’s no wonder that Akira has also inspired plenty of crossover fan art. How many characters do you recognize from among those featured below?

There’s a huge variety of subgenres within science fiction, and one of them is cyberpunk. This setting is usually heavily urbanized and makes strong use of industrial machinery. Robots and cyborgs aren’t uncommon, as cyberpunk seeks to blur the boundaries between human and machine.

What do you imagine when you think of cyberpunk?

There is no doubt that many people are interested in the recent news about AI and robotics engineering. It seems that futuristic technologies are getting more familiar to us every day. Cars are now capable of automatic driving, and robots work instead of people... Things that we thought would come in a far future are already here. What will happen when science fiction will turn into reality?

This time we feature cyberpunk illustrations. Please enjoy the neo-futuristic atmosphere of these masterpieces!

Sunken cities are often tagged as submerged cities. Once prosperous centers of activity, these cities no longer offer human presence, but instead the cold silence of an abandoned world that brings forth a wonderful harmony of color. The city is where a dense population goes through life. Since the 19th century, humanity has been erecting skyscrapers and underground spaces in order to efficiently use the limited space that humanity possesses. The infrastructure of highways and electricity constructed in order to maintain the daily lives of the citizens uniquely blends into the landscape. It’s possible that people are fascinated with men-made objects exactly because they posses characteristics that are not found in the natural world. Today, we feature various illustrations of the city, where men-made architectural structures and the culture of daily life interweave.

It is often theorized what our world is going to look like in 50 or 100 years from now. Would it become a digitized world with branching communication networks? Will we be living side by side with robots? Methods of transportation may even become so highly developed that avionics and space travel would become more practical. It’s not like some far-away world that can never exist, but instead a world with so many concrete possibilities so we can let our imaginations run free.

This time we are featuring illustrations which depict scenarios of the near future. Enjoy!

Today is Day of Tokyo. On this day in 1868, Edo was renamed to become Tokyo-fu. It is said that Toshimichi Okubo is the person responsible for the naming. Back then, in 1889, there were 15 towns grouped under Tokyo-shi, but they came together with Tokyo-fu in 1943 to form the Tokyo-to we know today. The 23 wards were also split 5 years after the birth of Tokyo-to, in 1948. Currently, Tokyo-to is a bustling metropolitan city that has gone through a series of ups and downs.
Today, in conjunction with Day of Tokyo, we have a series of illustrations starring various spots in Tokyo. Find your favorite characters strolling along Tokyo of the past, present and future, and check out the works that show you Tokyo from a range of perspectives!

Islands that float in the air thanks to a mysterious force, artificial cities created by men thanks to advanced scientific technology… How do you reach these towns? How were they built? What would my life be like if I was living there? Just looking at these artworks stimulates our imagination!
Today we collected a series of illustrations portraying magical, fairytale-like “cities in the sky”. Enjoy!
