In the dead of winter, when the garden is looking a little bleak, camellias keep the landscape alive with their elegant blossoms and lustrous evergreen foliage. The contrast between their delicate red, white, or pink petals and dark green leaves is a stunning addition to any portrait, and it’s no wonder many artists on pixiv incorporate them into their drawings. Camellias aren’t just beautiful to look at either—you can even enjoy them as tea or oil for your hair and skin, which might just give you the same luster as these magnificent flowers!

Take a look at the following illustrations and marvel at the ways camellias bring out the beauty in each character!

The Camellia that blooms in deep red in the midst of lush green leaves, originating in Japan and China, was even featured in the Man'yōshū (Japan’s oldest existing poetry book). When Camellias were brought over to Europe they became known as flowers that imbue within them the Japanese Wa (harmony). It is said that the sight of withering Camellias brings an omen of bad luck, but when these flowers fall to the ground, their lingering beauty makes it seem like spring is still around the corner. In flower language the Camellia represents Pride, The Virtue of Humility and Perfect Beauty. It also represents the contrast between the strength and the softness of girls.

Today we feature illustrations of Camellia. Enjoy!

Since ancient times, the Camellia flowers have been enveloped around garden trees in Japan. Ranging from white to pink colors, they bloom colorfully even during the cold winters. The Camellia petals don't fall off individually-- the whole flower falls when it's time to drop. They're sometimes seen as a metaphor for people's heads falling off, so they have a bit of a dark, lonely side to them. Check out these illustrations!
