During the Edo period, the streets of Yoshiwara red-light district were crawling with beautiful girls called Oiran. They were easily recognizable for their luxurious, colorful kimono, flashy hairstyles and heavy makeup, which usually included a thick layer of white face powder. Even in modern times, they would be considered absolutely stunning and spectacular.
