In this anime, the world has suffered from environmental destruction and shift in the earth's crust as a backlash of the spread of "magma fuel", a type of energy. Not to mention the existence of a mysterious enemy called 'klaxosaurs'. Boys and girls are then raised to pilot a humanoid robot called 'Franxx' to fight against klaxosaurs.

Humanity lives in a mobile fort city called 'Plantation' and moves the city as they travel from place to place on the ruined earth.
