The engawa (an outer corridor that wraps around a house) is most associated with Japanese houses and the mere sight of it can make a hot day feel more bearable. A passing breeze and tree shades that feel nice on our skin, the jingle of the wind chime that tickles our ears, the smell of mosquito repellent incense reaching our noses, the sweetness of fresh watermelons that fill our cheeks, and the clear blue sky spreading right before our eyes… Illustrations that depict engawa remind us that summer is really a season that we experience with every cell of our body.
