The tag 'gender unknown' (性別不明) on pixiv is used to categorize illustrations that depict characters whose genders seem to lie outside the ideas and boundaries of gender that we are familiar with. When we spot an androgynous character, we can't tell their gender simply by looking at their body or clothes. It gets even harder when they decide to alternate between acting cool and cute.
