While pancakes are an iconic breakfast food in North America, they tend to be so sweet that they’re viewed as a dessert in Japan. In the US and Canada, they’re typically topped with maple syrup and butter. However in Japan, the syrup is often replaced by honey and in some combinations, ice cream or whipped cream is added. Different kinds of fruit and berries may also be served with them.
