Phonographs (蓄音機, chikuonki, translated as “gramophone” on pixiv) were really the first major leap in recording and playing back sound. There were quite a few methods of recording in the early days, with the storage materials ranging from tinfoil cylinders to zinc disks. However, the most recognized today are the vinyl record players of the mid-1900s.
