The pompadour is a distinctive look that has come in and out of style over the centuries. In the west, it’s considered genderless, with the Gibson Girl being a particularly notable fem variety. In the 1950s, however, it grew popular as a bad boy look.

While it’s definitely been out of style in the West for some time, Japanese gangs took a liking to the pompadour, and so it’s also a popular hairstyle for masculine characters in anime and manga.
