Drawings with a Tanabata Theme - An Event Written in the Stars
Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival, is one of the summer’s biggest summer events in Japan. According to folklore legend, the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi are lovers who are separated by the Milky Way. Tanabata falls on the seventh day of the seventh month (July 7th) and celebrates the one day a year when they’re reunited!
While specific customs for the event vary from region to region, the act of writing wishes on slips of paper and hanging them from bamboo is a longstanding tradition. This festival was the inspiration for Jirachi (from the Pokémon franchise) who’s bashfully peeking out of the colorful decorations.
