Kisses are perhaps a universal form of communication, but depending on the location, they can carry a variety of meanings. A kiss on the hand can be a show of respect and loyalty, while a kiss on the cheek can be a cute way of showing your affection or even just a simple greeting. 

As Eri Chitanda plants a kiss on the cheek of Oreki Houtarou (from Hyouka) it's a bit hard to tell just what's going through his head.
