Fan Art of the Stars of “My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong, as I Expected” - Over a Decade of a Romcom Being SNAFU

High school can be tough and sometimes to get through it a little help is needed. That help however, can come from the most unexpected places.

Over a decade ago, the world was introduced to Hikigaya Hachiman, a pessimistic teen who, thanks to years of social isolation and discrimination based on his “dead fish-eyes”, sees through everyone around him and is none too happy with the sight. He sees youth and happiness as nothing more than illusions created by hypocrites for hypocrites.

Out of concern for his future, his teacher forces him to join the school’s Service Club as a way of ingratiating him into a normal high school life.

The Service Club, however, is led by Yukino Yukinoshita, who also happens to be its sole member until Hikigaya’s forced entry. Born to a wealthy family, exceedingly beautiful, and intelligent to a fault, one would think that she’s got it all. Her icy demeanor, however, has earned her the nickname “the Ice-cold Beauty”. Though harboring a deep desire to be helpful, her blunt analysis of others and their flaws leave her with few who would call her their friend.

Hikigaya and Yukino are immediately antagonistic with each other and just when it seems the Service Club will be disbanded, they receive their first customer in the form of Yui Yuigahama, a friendly and outgoing girl hoping to bake cookies for “a certain someone”. Feeling cursed with an inability to express her true feelings, Yui begins to idolize the Service Club members, as they seem to be masters at it.

Despite Yukino’s initial objections, Yui begins attending more and more Service Club sessions and the three begin what can only be described as an awkward love triangle peppered with self-discovery, heartbreak, and redemption.

Fans have enjoyed this franchise, which began as a light novel but expanded into manga, video games, and an anime series that celebrated its tenth anniversary on April 5th, 2023. A visual novel game for the PlayStation4 and Nintendo Switch was released in Japan on April 27, 2023.
