Fan Art of the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Award-Winning Series - Who’s the Cream of the Crop?
What are the Crunchyroll Anime Awards?
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards is a global event organized by Crunchyroll, a subscription VOD streaming service that offers the world’s largest library of a whopping 1,000 anime shows and counting. Ever since its inauguration in 2017, the awards show has been celebrating the best anime series, characters, and performances from the previous year, with the results determined by both a panel of judges and the general public.
The awards categories cover a wide range, with notable categories being the champion title, “Anime of the Year,” “Best Main Character,” “Best Continuing Series,” and “Best Score.” This year saw the introduction of two new categories, namely “Best Art Director” and “Best Cinematography,” and the revival of the category “Best Slice of Life.” All winners of the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards were announced on-site at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo, Japan, on March 2nd, with fans worldwide tuning in to see the results live.
What is the selection process like?
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards features two rounds of voting, the first round being determined solely by a panel of judges and the second round by the same panel and fans. (That’s you!)
In the first round, a panel of judges comprising industry veterans or well-established and knowledgeable content creators selects six nominees for each category. The votes are then opened up to the public for one week, and fans are allowed one vote per category per day. The winner of the category is the nominee who garners the most support from the judges and the general public, with 70% of the votes coming from the judges and the other 30% from fans around the world.
In order to be eligible, a show needs to first and foremost be considered an animated series and must meet all of the following requirements:
a) Produced primarily in Japan,
b) Had at least one episode aired on television or online in Japan between October 2022 and September 2023, at least in part, and
c) Had at least one episode that had its initial legal distribution outside of Japan in 2022 or 2023.
