A staple feature of traditional Japanese houses is the engawa, a Japanese porch-like structure that serves as a space between the inside and outside of the house. While it’s rare to see them in newer homes and apartments, they’re still quite common in the countryside, and many folks in Japan have fond memories of eating watermelon on the engawa or taking a nap there during summer while visiting their grandparents.
