The Kingdom Hearts franchise is easily one of the most recognizable and notable games, at least in part due to it being a collaboration between Square Enix and the Walt Disney Company.

The first installment was released in March 2002 on the Playstation 2, and since then over 32 million copies of the various games have shipped worldwide across a multitude of platforms. Most recently, Nintendo Switch ports for the vast majority of the Kingdom Hearts games were announced in October 2021.

While the story of this dearly beloved series is a bit convoluted at times, it hasn’t stopped Sora, Riku, Kairi, and the rest of the characters from capturing the hearts of the players. So much so that Sora is finally being added to the roster of heroes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which was also announced in October 2021!

Will you be playing the Switch release of the series? Or maybe you’re more excited for Sora being a playable character in Super Smash Bros?

Back in the 1990s, no one could talk about video games without mentioning the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the same could be said about RPGs and Square Co., Ltd. (now Square Enix Co., Ltd.), which created many smash-hit RPG titles during the era. The RPG titles that Square released back then continued to push the boundary of RPG, of what an RPG could achieve, and many of the systems that we take for granted today were first established in the 1990s. Active Time Battle, a flexible scenario, multiple endings, a New Game with a higher level of difficulty... Are you familiar with these systems and more?

Today, we're featuring illustrations of the RPGs that Square released in the 1990s, including some Final Fantasy titles. Enjoy!

A spin-off from the Final Fantasy series came the Mana series that soon became its own world... in Japan, it's known as Seiken Densetsu. It's been 25 years since the first Seiken Densetsu was released. Today, Jan 30th, Kenji Itō produced SQUARE ENIX Presents Seiken Densetsu Live ~Echoes of Mana~ concert starts!
Inside the Mana series, the second Seiken Densetsu was released in 1993 and is known as "Secret of Mana" to the West. It was the first game of the series that featured more things that we know and love today in the Mana series. A young, weak boy... a resilient girl in love, and a sprite that made excuses... each character had its own personality and yet together the three of the characters fates tied together. With music covering each path of their journey, the series brings a nostalgic feeling to many.
