Wonderful Pretty Cure!, the 21st installment in the Pretty Cure franchise, began airing on February 4th, 2024. Directed by Masanori Sato and written by Yoshimi Narita, the series focuses on the bonds between humans and their animal companions, proving that true friendship knows no bounds.

The story is set in Animal Town, a place where humans and animals live together, and centers on middle school student Iroha Inukai (Cure Friendy) and her dog Komugi (Cure Wonderful), as well as Mayu Nekoyashiki (Cure Lillian) and her cat Yuki (Cure Nyammy). Can you believe it? We're coming up on 20 years of the Pretty Cure franchise dominating the magical girl world.

Since Futari wa Pretty Cure, each series has been a unique wonderful adventure. It can't have been simple to tackle subjects like the importance of imagination and diversity, fighting in the face of adversity, and other hard-hitting life lessons in such a fun way, yet the brand has become well-known for it over the course of its two-decade existence.

Even though each series has its own group of ardent fans, the yearly team-up films featuring that year's current squad plus a few teams from previous series are also hugely popular. One such movie, titled Pretty Cure All Stars F, is slated to be released on September 15, 2023, and will star 77 of the franchise's heroines. This new film will shatter the Guinness World Record for “Most Magical Warriors in an Anime Film” previously held by Hug! Pretty Cure Futari wa Pretty Cure: All Stars Memories, the film that celebrated the franchise’s 15th anniversary.

Hisashi Kagawa × Yoshihiko Umakoshi - Batoru Hiroin Sakuga & Dezain Tekunikku (Yoshihiko Umakoshi - Battle Heroine Drawing & Design Techniques) was released by Genkosha MOOK in May 2017. It's an amazing book packed with drawing advice and rough sketches by the animators Hisashi Kagawa and Yoshihiko Umakoshi.

If you're into a certain anime, you probably already heard these names; otherwise, just know that Kagawa and Umakoshi were in charge of the character design for, respectively, Fresh Pretty Cure! and HeartCatch PreCure! In other words, no one is more qualified than the two of them to talk about "battle heroines"!
