If there’s one thing that signals the arrival of fall in Japan, it’s the smell of kinmokusei flowers! Kinmokusei, otherwise known as fragrant olive flowers or sweet osmanthus, are considered one of Japan’s three most distinctly scented flowers, alongside daphnes (jincho-ge) in early spring and the common gardenia (kuchinashi) in early summer. With their signature star-like petals and sweet and heady fragrance, these orange-yellow blossoms dance in the wind, carrying the scent of autumn with them everywhere. You can almost hear the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot and smell the crisp autumnal air through these illustrations, don’t you think?

What scents remind you of autumn the most?

As the days get shorter and the nights longer, one flower starts to bloom in earnest: the red spider lily. Commonly known as higanbana in Japan, red spider lilies are said to have over a thousand different names, many of them disturbing, such as 死人花 (shibitobana, lit. “corpse flower”) and 地獄花 (jigokubana, lit. “hell flower”). Due to their poisonous nature and blood-red petals, it’s no wonder they’re strongly associated with the dead in Japanese culture. Regardless, they have an eerie beauty that’s hard to ignore, don’t you think?

Knowing their symbolism, do these illustrations featuring red spider lilies feel different to you now?

The kinmokusei, known as the fragrant olive or sweet osmanthus, is more than just a flower; it's an aromatic herald of autumn. With petals that resemble tiny stars, these blossoms cluster on branches, subtly shifting from pale yellow to a zestful orange. These dainty darlings dance in the autumn breeze, painting gardens and parks with their hue. For many, the kinmokusei isn't just a flower; it's a memory, a feeling, a sign of the season's gentle shift.

Enjoy this collection of drawings featuring these pretty flowers!

Known by a number of names in Japan, the red spider lily is a gorgeous flower that is considered the beacon of fall, which is when they're usually seen blooming along highways and byways. They're even planted around rice paddies because their toxins help ward off would-be pests and invaders.

Red spider lilies are associated with death and were once believed to guide souls to their next reincarnation, which makes it fitting for Kikyo (from Inuyasha) to be surrounded by them.

Have any of the illustrations below stunned you with their beauty?

Red spider lilies typically bloom in autumn, and in Japan, the best time to see them is in October. There’s an eerie beauty to them, as the vivid color is reminiscent of blood, and they’re strongly associated with cemeteries and the dead in Japanese folklore.

Knowing that, the illustrations below take on another level of nuance, don’t they? Why do you think Kanao (from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) is smelling a red spider lily?

One such sight is a field of Susuki grass (ススキ, Chinese silver grass). A fluffy field as far as the eye can see may just leave you inspired.

Hyakkimaru might need Dororo’s (both from Dororo) help to experience Susuki grass. Since these fields are seasonal, visiting one in person might be difficult. But you can see Susuki grass any time through the illustrations below!
