The western sweater-and-blazer style was gradually implemented before taking off in the mid-1990s, and it soon became the dominant style for high school girls in Japan.

As such, the sailor uniform became more common for middle schoolers, but both feature points of appeal. The sailor outfit is cute with its sharp contrasting colors, while the blazer-and-sweater style is more in line with a post-graduation appearance.
