Have you ever wished to master the anime coloring style? Cel shading, the coloring technique used for anime, is easy to learn if you have the right tools! Software like CLIP STUDIO or Photoshop will make coloring a breeze.

The cel shading technique comes from the era when the number of colors you could use in animation was limited. For this reason, gradients are replaced with flat tones and shadows, significantly simplifying the coloring process. The main characteristics of this technique are black, thick outlines and distinct shadowing patterns. A similar technique is called gyaruge coloring (or "gal-game coloring"), but the difference with cel shading is still quite visible since this second method uses a wider range of gradations and shades. Today we put together a collection of useful cel shading tutorials directly from the country that created anime - Japan! Enjoy.

There are so many different ways to color an illustration, but the "thick painting" method is the best one if you're aiming to make your drawings look almost three dimensional. Today we collected a series of tutorials to make your life easier!

The so-called "thick painting" technique is also known as "grisaille" or "grayscale painting". Shadows and highlights are smoothly added to the illustrations, so it's the optimal technique for beginners too. If you'd like to give it a try but you don't know where to start, or if you'd like to learn how other artists color their works... You're in the right place! Please take a look.

I'm sure many of you who experienced coloring with color pencils or with water paints have trouble coloring layers, shadows, and expressing the texture of skin and hair before. It makes the finished work giving soft impression but on the other hand it might come out too simple and you can say this is the difficult part about color pencils. Coloring the reflection of the lights in the eyes or the wrinkles on the outfit, these need a technique don't you think? Transparent watercolors are a specific kind of watercolors that allow light to pass through the pigment particles on paper, giving the painting a transparent finish. It’s really fun to experiment with transparent watercolors, since you can test different combinations and different grades of opacity to meet completely different results.
Today’s Spotlight is about illustrations of transparent watercolor palettes created using the colors of various art suppliers, such as Holbein and Kusakabe. They can be useful when using analog painting tools, but also when using transparent watercolor brushes while drawing digital illustrations. Take a look!

Have you heard of the art technique, Grisaille before? Grisaille is a technique where the painting is done entirely in layers of black and white. With Grisaille, it is easier to bring out depth as the art works are shaded in black and white before the first coat of paint. It is easy to draw digitally too, as you can use layers, and it is slowly becoming a popular technique.
Today, we have a series of illustrations that demonstrate Grisaille techniques and even comprehensive guides. For those who are having trouble with coloring and shadowing, do check it out!
