Short-shorts, booty shorts, Daisy Dukes… There are a variety of English terms for the shortest of the short pants. The specific term “hot pants” was coined in the 1970s, and it’s the one that ended up as a Japanese loan word (ホットパンツ).
While denim is still a go-to fabric for hot pants, they can be made out of just about any material, including velvet, fur, brocade, and other luxury textiles. Hot pants in Japan are often paired with stockings and boots.
