Just about anyone interested in Japan and its culture will have seen torii at some point. Found at the entrances or within Shinto shrines, these symbolic gates serve as entryways to some of the nation’s most sacred areas. A majority of the ones you’ll encounter in real life are painted a vibrant red which is believed to ward off evil. Those in the realm of fantasy, however, can be found in a number of shapes, sizes, and colors.
