Reisalin "Ryza" Stout is a girl living a fairly good, if boring, life on Kurken Island with her friends Lent Marslink and Tao Mongarten. They later meet and befriend Klaudia Valentz after sneaking away to the mainland, and then manage to finagle themselves apprenticeships with the alchemist Empel Vollmer and his bodyguard Lila Decyrus after the two save them from certain danger.
