During the middle ages, some doctors employed the use of these plague masks for protection when handling infectious diseases. In the beak portion of the mask, spices and herbs would be placed in order to prevent the bad smell of the disease from spreading to the individual. The uncanny designs of the masks may inspire some new artistic swings.
