Here are the nominations for "Top 100 Internet Buzzwords" 2021 - Uma Musume, Jujutsu Kaisen, Tokyo Revengers, and more!

Top 100 Internet Buzzwords is a project powered by pixiv and Dwango. The two companies have joined forces to analyze the number of visits in 2021 to each entry page on their online dictionaries, pixiv Encyclopedia and Nico Nico Pedia, in order to determine the most popular buzzwords of the year. 

About "Top 100 Internet Buzzwords"

Launched in 2018, Top 100 Internet Buzzwords is an event to determine the most popular buzzwords on the internet. 100 words are nominated in advance, and the most popular is elected "Word of the Year".


The award ceremony that announces the winner and the ranking of the 100 words is broadcast on Nico Nico Live, and last year it saw a total of 380,000 spectators, even becoming a trending topic on Twitter. Many personalities and organizations related to each buzzword will join the show to elect the most popular buzzword of the year. Moreover, a "pixiv Award" will be assigned to the word which, in 2021, saw the most dramatic increase of tagged works compared to 2020, while a "niconico Award" will be assigned to the word that Nico Nico users elect as the most popular on the net by answering a dedicated questionnaire.

* Nominations and Winner Selection Method:


The 100 nominated buzzwords are those with the highest number of accesses compared to last year on both services in the period from January 1st (Mon) to November 24th (Fri), 2021. Among these 100 words, the one with the highest difference in the number of accesses will receive the "Word of the Year" Award.

This year, the buzzwords that received the most nominations are those related to the smash-hit app Uma Musume Pretty Derby. Other chart-topper manga and anime titles include Jujutsu Kaisen, which has emerged as one of the most popular of the year, Tokyo Revengers, which has even been made into a live-action movie, Resident Evil: Village, a video game that has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, and Evangelion: 3.0+1.0, the new Evangelion movie which was released in March. 
In addition, the list also includes memes you might have seen at least once on social media, such as Choco ga ichiban desu wa! (lit. "Chocolate is the best!" from Uma Musume) and Toge! Ora wa oniichan da zo! (lit. "Move, I'm his big brother!" from Jujutsu Kaisen). All in all, the 100 nominations collected by pixiv and Dwango do a great job reflecting the state of the internet in 2021.
