Do you have a specific outfit you wear when you exercise? Up until recently, athletic bloomers were a common type of gym uniform worn in Japan. These were initially based on the western volleyball team uniforms featured in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

While uncommon now, a pair of swimsuit-like bottoms were part of the girls’ uniform. It’s a look you may have seen some of your favorite anime characters rock at some point. Many marathon runners also adopt this style to shave precious seconds off their times.
