Fan Art of Kitarō Tanjō: GeGeGe no Nazo

When it comes to tales based on Japanese folklore and yōkai, no series is as iconic or well-known as the late Shigeru Mizuki’s beloved series, GeGeGe no Kitarō. Kitarō Tanjō: GeGeGe no Nazo (鬼太郎誕生ゲゲゲの謎, lit. “The Birth of Kitarō: The Mystery of GeGeGe”) was released on November 17th, 2023, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Shigeru Mizuki. The film basically serves as a precursor to the GeGeGe no Kitarō series and revolves around Kitarō’s biological father, Medama-Oyaji, and his adoptive father, Mizuki.

Set in 1955, Medama Oyaji and Mizuki each visit Yagura Village with a different purpose: the former to find his missing wife and the latter to carry out a secret mission under the pretext of mourning the passing of the head of his family. As an ugly fight unfolds in the Ryuga family over who is to succeed the late patriarch, a member of the family is brutally murdered at the village shrine, marking the beginning of a horrifying chain of events.
