In this game, players take on the role of the Trailblazer, who begins their journey by waking up with no memories on the Astral Express, the cosmic train that is traveling through the universe on the Star Rail.

One of the factions that exists in the Honkai: Star Rail universe is the Stellaron Hunters, a mysterious organization that collects Stellarons, cancerous objects that are considered seeds of disaster. Among the members of this faction is Firefly, a young girl born as a weapon and afflicted with Entropy Loss Syndrome due to modifications to her genetic makeup. Wanting to learn the meaning of life and obtain a shot at it, she joins the Stellaron Hunters, hoping to defy her tragic fate.
