Fan Art of CLAMP Works - Celebrating a Beloved Manga Group

Known for popular series like Cardcaptor Sakura and xxxHolic, the four-woman mangaka group known as CLAMP has become a titan in the anime industry. With so many of their series reaching a global audience for over three decades, even casual anime fans are familiar with at least one of their titles. Here, we’ll be taking a look at just a few of the works over the years that helped bring this team international acclaim. 

Tokyo Babylon (1990 - 1993)

Subaru Sumeragi is a powerful Japanese magician who solves various otherworldly mysteries as his family has done for centuries. He lives in Tokyo with his twin sister Hokuto and their mutual friend and veterinarian Seishiro Sakurazuka. Many of the social problems prevalent at the time of writing have been interwoven into this dark fantasy manga. A live-action sequel film, Tokyo Babylon 1999, hit theaters in 1993. 


A full anime adaptation was announced in 2020, but problems have caused the production to be delayed.

CLAMP School Detectives (1992 - 1993)

The story is set in CLAMP Academy, a super-elite integrated school. The executive officers of the elementary student council, Nokoru Imonoyama, Suoh Takamura, and Akira Ijuin form a team of detectives that work according to the motto of a predecessor – be of service to the women of the world. The trio tackles various troubles faced by women they encounter in this school comedy manga. A 26-episode anime series was broadcast in 1997.

X (1992 - ???)

Since its debut in 1992, X has been released intermittently, most recently going back on hiatus in 2021. Set in Tokyo, a war unfurls in this yet unfinished story between the Dragons of Heaven, a group of superhumans who wish to save humankind, and the Dragons of Earth, a rival faction that seeks to rid the world of the plague of humanity and restore the planet to its origins. An animated film hit theaters in 1996 and in 2001, a 24-episode anime debuted.

Magic Knight Rayearth (1993 - 1996)

Second-year junior high students Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji are transported to the magical world of Cephiro after a monster attacks during their field trip to Tokyo Tower. The three reluctantly become magical knights and go on a quest to save the fantastical world they’ve been drawn into. In the second cour, after having returned to their homeworld, the three return to Cephiro and take up arms once again to face an impending threat.

Cardcaptor Sakura (1996 - 2000)

After accidentally releasing the sealed mystic Clow Cards from a magical book in her father’s library, Sakura Kinoshita works to put them back in their rightful place with the help of the cards’ guardian, Keroberos.

The 1998 anime series ran for 70 episodes with films released in both 1999 and 2000. The series has also been made into light novels and video games.

In 2016, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card debuted as a sequel and picked up where the original left off. As of publishing this article, you can watch Clear Card on Amazon Prime, Funimation, and Crunchyroll. The original anime is also available on Netflix!

Clover (1997 - 1999)

A young, isolated, and mysterious girl named Su is escorted by ex-military soldier Satoshi F. Kazuhiko, who was assigned to the task, to an abandoned amusement park. Meanwhile, the government of this futuristic world is conducting a search for powerfully gifted children that can manipulate technology called Clovers. An animated short film that preceded the Cardcaptor Sakura film was shown in theaters in 1999.

Angelic Layer (1999 - 2001)

This story is set sometime in Japan’s future, when battles between angelic looking dolls are all the rage in a game known as Angelic Layer. Middle schooler and newcomer Misaki Suzuhara alongside her partner angel Hikaru take flight into the world of Angelic Layer. A 26-episode anime ran in 2001.

Chobits (2000 - 2002)

Humanoid robots known as persocoms are a normal facet of everyday life in Tokyo. After failing his university entrance exam, protagonist Hideki Motosuwa moves from his family’s farm in Hokkaido to the big city. Not long after settling in, he finds an abandoned persocom he names Chii and sets out to not only find out more about her, but to teach her about the world around her. A 27-episode anime series and an additional OVA debuted in 2002.

Kimihiro Watanuki is a high school student with the power to see spirits. He happens upon a shop that claims to grant wishes. The shop’s owner, Yuko Ichihara, agrees to grant his wish on the condition that he temporarily works for her, which is the start of a strange journey that has to be seen to be believed.


Not only has this series been made into both an animated TV series and film, but there was also a live-action TV series debuted in 2013, a stage play production in 2021, and a live-action film is set to hit theaters in April 2022!

Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle (2003 - 2009)

Young archaeologist Syaoran, Sakura the princess of Clow, Japanese ninja Kurogane, and magician Fay D. Flowright from the country of Celes go on an epic journey in this series that seeks to connect all of CLAMP’s previous works, each with their own motives. The original manga was published between 2003 and 2009, and a sequel in the form of the Nirai Kanai Arc ran between 2014 and 2016. 


A two-season, 52-episode anime series ran from 2005 to 2006.

Kobato (2005 - 2011)

A young girl with a deep desire to go to a particular place signs a contract that will allow her to do so in exchange for filling a mysterious bottle with the “healed hearts” of people. Accompanied by Ioryogi, a spirit taking the form of a stuffed dog toy, the two set off on to fulfill her mission. A 24-episode anime series ran from late 2009 to early 2010.
