The Apothecary Diaries is an ongoing light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga and illustrated by Touko Shino, originally published on the user-generated novel publishing website, Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The series has also been adapted into a manga and anime, with the anime premiering on October 22nd, 2023.

In the red-light district of a fictional country based on ancient China lives Maomao, a young girl who works as an apothecary. One day, she gets kidnapped and sold to the Imperial Court, where she is forced to work as a servant. Despite her circumstances, she plans on working there until her years of servitude are over without drawing anyone’s attention—until she gets wind of the fact that the Emperor’s children are gravely ill.

Though disinterested in other human beings, Maomao is deeply passionate about poison and medicine, and she decides to investigate the cause of their illness on a whim. Soon enough, her knowledge, wit, and talent are recognized by the eunuch Jinshi, who appoints her lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort to taste the lady’s food for poison. With her extensive experience as an apothecary, Maomao gradually makes a name for herself by solving various mysteries in the court.

The first half of Season 2 of the anime Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation finished airing last month on September 25th, with the second half slated to premiere in April 2024. It goes without saying that Sylphiette, who is consistently in the top five in various popularity polls and recently won the Mushoku Tensei community poll championship on Reddit with 47 percent of the votes, is a strong fan favorite!

Who is Sylphiette (Fitts)?

Sylphiette, also known as Fitts, is one of the heroines in Mushoku Tensei and Rudeus’s childhood friend. She is half human, a quarter elf, and a quarter beast. Due to her emerald green hair resembling that of the Superd Tribe, a tribal race of infamous warriors from the Demon Continent, she was constantly bullied as a child, causing her to become shy and meek. After Rudeus saves her from her bullies, the two form a codependent friendship until Rudeus is sent away by his father to act as Eris’s tutor. She eventually resolves to train herself to support him in the future and later becomes Princess Ariel’s bodyguard under the alias Fitts.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is a light novel series written by Rifujin na Magonote and illustrated by Shirotaka. Originally serialized on the popular web novel website Shousetsuka ni Narou from November 2012 to April 2015, it received a print release under Media Factory’s MF Books imprint in January 2014, with pixiv user Shirotaka providing illustrations. The series ran from January 24th, 2014 to November 25th, 2022, and has 26 volumes in total. Known as one of the pioneers of high fantasy Narou web novels, the franchise has over 13 million copies in circulation as of June 2023.

Spy Classroom is an ongoing light novel series written by Takemachi and illustrated by Tomari, published under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint since January 18th, 2020. In an age where wars are no longer fought in the open, countries now fight by deploying masters of deception like spies instead of weapons of mass destruction. After the spy team Inferno is wiped out, their sole surviving member, Klaus, a top spy with a 100 percent mission success rate, sets out to create a new spy team. This new team, Lamplight, is expected to specialize in “Impossible Missions” with at least a 90 percent chance of failure—in other words, death.

Unfortunately, the seven members he recruits for his team are all bottom-of-the-barrel misfits with no practical experience whatsoever. The series currently has ten volumes, as well as four short story volumes, and has been adapted into a manga and anime. The anime adaptation of the light novel, “Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation” began airing on January 10th, 2021. The novel was originally posted on the Japanese novel-writing site, “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” (小説家になろう), where it’s been called a pioneer of the adult-oriented isekai reincarnation and self-insertion genres.

The protagonist was a 34-year old male NEET who dies in a traffic accident and is reincarnated as a boy named Rudeus (Rudy) in a world of swords and sorcery. This time, he vows to make something of his life and the story unfolds. His private tutor, a master of sorcery herself, is Roxy Migurdia. His childhood friend is the tomboyish Sylphiette, who is part elf. Eris Boreas Greyrat is skilled with a sword, a noblewoman, and a bit tsundere. A story is woven with these charming characters and the series is immensely popular with the male users of pixiv.
