“The desire to see my ideas come to fruition” - the driving force behind my creations
olo’s work environment. Here is where his fictional banknotes and parodies of newspapers, news programs are made and shared on internet.
- How and when do you get ideas?
I have no idea (laughs). There are times that long periods of thinking would produce nothing while sometimes when I work on uninteresting sums at work, ideas will come to me.
When an idea hits me, I would be so moved that I want to start making it as soon as I can. It’s the same when I create fictional banknotes and for parodies of news broadcast.
I want to see the end product as soon as I can, this is why I make them.
Indeed. If this was out of a different motivation, let’s say the number of retweets one can get on Twitter or to make some headlines, even to spread malicious rumors or to toy with the market shares, if you truly want it, you definitely can do it.
But none of the above reasons interest me so I will never do it.
- Market shares?! It doesn’t sound like a joke at all. I’m very glad that you’re not motivated by any of them! (laughs)
To know the people who “feel the same as I do” through my work
- You don’t seem to be affected by the number of retweets you get on Twitter.
I still feel the desire for my creations to be seen by a lot of people. The yearning to be “praised” is also well and alive.
Simply put, there’s no need for individuality if only “numbers” (that shows how many people have seen it) matters. There’s no need to use your mind for it. Which is why they will seem like they are machine-made.
Lately, I’ve been told that it’s not enough to simply attract views for promotional videos and I wonder if what I said previously is similar in nature...
I would like to have many people see it but I certainly don’t feel like keeping it to myself either. I do feel that a simple ‘wow, it’s interesting’ and letting it take its course is enough but there’s a part of me to desire more from it. It’s kind of complicated.
- Which brings us to - what does it mean for you to continue sharing your work online?
There will be people who dislikes it but the ones who takes interest in them are probably people like myself - is how I feel about it. Knowing there are such people might somehow reassure me that “what I feel isn’t far from the truth”.
- I see… What you have said so far have been so interesting that the question(s) I planned for really doesn’t matter anymore (laughs)
(intrigued)... Are the things I’ve said really all that interesting?
Here’s the first part of the interview!
