After the death of their mother, the two brothers Alphonse and Edward perform the forbidden alchemic technique of human transmutation in an attempt to resurrect her. However, the transmutation backfires and according to the law of equivalent exchange, one brother's left leg is destroyed while the other brother loses his entire body. This is the premise of the shocking anime Fullmetal Alchemist. The original work narrates the story of Edward and his adventures to research a way to restore his brother's body.
